Abby's OK

She's got a titanium rod in her leg, but given the circumstances, U.S. forward Abby Wambach is doing just fine. Still in a bit of pain, yes...but she's feeling well enough to attend her first rehab session today as well as speak with the media via conference call. Click here to read some impressive quotes from Abby as talks about the injury, her confidence in her team and the immediate future. You can also go to the front page of ussoccer.com and click on a podcast of the call. Suffice it to say, Abby is a strong woman, of body and mind, and she has handled this setback with all the grace and professionalism that she has displayed while racking up 99 career goals and leading the USA in scoring in three straight world championships. Let us not forget that the U.S. lost two other important players to major injuries right before the Olympic Team was chosen in defender Cat Whitehill and midfielder Leslie Osborne, both of whom have also dealt extremely well with their injuries. Both Cat and Leslie are already well into their rehabilitation and comebacks. Feel free to post messages for Abby, Leslie and Cat, as well as good luck wishes to the U.S. team right here on the WNT Blog. We are sure they will read them. The team leaves for China on Wednesday, and once we get there and settled, we'll start up the Blog again to keep you up to date on the happenings of the U.S. team at the 2008 Olympics. For now, we're off to Beijing...

Abby, you're poise and strength is an inspiration to all women. You and the rest of the USWNT are examples on what true professional athletes should be. You put your heart into the game, never complain, never roll around in *agony* every time you get fouled (I won't name names, ha!), and I'm confident you will bounce back from this injury as strong as ever. I've been rehabing a dislocated knee cap for 6 months now so I know how you must feel. Stay positive, and good luck in Beijing team!

My daughters and I are wishing you all the best with a smooth and successful recovery. Thank you for being a great role model for the many girls in this country and around the world. You have handled the situation with dignity and strength. You are in our thoughts and we wish you nothing but success. In addition, thanks to the blog writers for mentioning the loss of Cat Whitehill and Leslie Osbourne...they deserve our best wishes too.

Abby, Cat and Leslie...get well soon!! I wish all of you a healthy and speedy recovery. As each of you got hurt I was hoping it would be the last injury for this team before the Olympics, but I guess even you guys can't even get away from the "bad things happen in three's" idea. The Olympics won't be the same without you guys but I can't wait to watch this team pull together to win Gold :-) You've all worked so hard and done so much for this team and I know when you come back it won't be anything less...good luck!

Abby, you impress me with what you said about getting injured and how you are responding! You are, as well as your teammates are the GREATEST role models for you daughters! I hope you a speedy and healthy recovery, it sounds like you are in great hands, and will definitely be watching the WNT in the Olympics as well as all of their other games.
You are an inspiration to all young women, and men, athletes!
God bless you, your family and the team!
Win the Gold ladies!!!!

You all are amazing. I think i speak for a lot of people when i say that my heart sank after hearing the news, but I agree wholeheartedly with what Pia and Abby have said. The teams chances at gold are far from over. Wathcing you all change your methodology and run the bench like you've been doing builds confindence in me as it should all USWNT fans. I will say that I don't know if that "really real" promotion you're running is true anymore, because the way Abby handled that collision was anything but typical. I guess that speaks leaps and bounds for her character. The best of luck from one of countless fans.Look forward to seeing you all with the Gold!!!

The facebook group wishes Abby, Cat, and Leslie the best of luck with your injuries. It's unfortunate that we had to lose you guys, especially so close to the olympics, but we're all looking forward to seeing you guys play when you are all recovered. Keep on fighting ! We know that you guys won't let these injuries prevent you from coming back and playing the game you know best. You guys are all amazing and we can't wait till you guys are back on your feet.

Also to the team, we know you guys can do it. and whatever the outcome in the olympics, you guys are and always will be number one in our books. regardless of the media, you guys still have a very good chance at winning gold. we'll be watching you guys play at 1am in the olympics... good thing it's summer time and we don't have school.

It's definitely good to know that she's doing fine and she will definitely do fine because we all know that Abby's a tough ball!

Hope we can see some of Abby when she returns for the WPL in the fall/summer of 2009!

Have a good recovery, Abby and GO USA!

Team USA, I was at the last game, and the demeanor of the team, Coach Sundage, all the assistant coaches, training staff, Doc, and the support staff was 100% ready....Ready to finish what this group of women has begun. Abby Wambach's role remains, however different it may be. Physical strength and skill can be equated among the best in the world. It is mentally what differentiates the champions from the others. This team has already shown their opponents a bit of what is to come. They beat Brazil in a friendly that was played at the highest level. This USA team has not treated any game leading to these Olympics as a "practice." We are ready...TEAM, COUNTRY, WORLD, GOLD!

To: Abby, We met about three years ago in Bangor, Maine. Sorry to hear about your injury. I'm sure that the team will miss you. Good luck with rehab. I'm looking forward to more great soccer from you.
Dr. Tim Boley
Formerly of Bangor, Maine

I had the same procedure as Abby done a few years ago after a collision with a keeper. I went through no special rehab and was back playing by the next season so with all the attention she will get she will be her normal self in no time. She can expect some slight pain in her knee in cold environments but it is very slight.

My daughter and I had a wonderful opportunity to watch the U.S. play Brazil at UCD.

While watching was a wonderful experience, we were saddened by Abby's injury. We watched her during her warm-ups and during play. We have never seen such an intense, strong presence on the field.

Abby, we wish you and the other injured players a full and speedy recovery.

GO USA!! Play with passion ladies
